In 1997, psychologists Arthur Aron and Elaine Aron published the results of a study they conducted in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin that tested how emotional intimacy could be accelerated by structured vulnerability. The method? A series of 36 questions, grouped into three sets that get increasingly personal—and it worked.

This list became popular in 2015, when writer Mandy Len Catron wrote a viral New York Times article titled “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This.” She shared her own experience trying the questions—and falling in love.

We recently tried the 36 Questions ourselves, and while we loved the experience, we felt this list skipped over a lot of important questions that we feel need to be asked before getting serious or taking a step like moving in together or getting married.
